Handle Tray, Circa 1845. Fully Hallmarked. The center is engraved
with snake around the pillar with a bird on top which is a symbol of
medical field. It is also engraved Frank H. Hamilton from his friend
and pupil with 3 initials. Frank H. Hamilton was a pre civil war New
York physician and surgeon. He was born on 9/13/1813 in Vermont and
died 8/11/1886. He was a professor of surgery i Buffalo Medical
College in 1844. Subsequently Dean of the faculty and surgeon to the
charity hospital 1861-1865. He occupied the Chair for surgery,
fractures and dislocations at the Bellvue Hospital Medical College,
that chair being the first of its kind in the world. During the
civil war he served as surgeon of the 31st New York Infantry and was
made brigade surgeon after the battle of Bull Run and later U.S.
Medical Director. He served as consulting surgeon to hospitals and
asylums and became widely known as authority on surgery. His three
large books having a place in the literature on medical science. In
his later years his place in history was secured by a tragic event.
Almost immediately after President Garfield was shot in 1881, Mrs.
Garfield insisted upon sending for Dr. Hamilton. He was telegraphed
for and a special train being provided him, he went directly to the
President's bedside until the President died. Condition: Generally
