C. 1879 Aloe and Hernstein Amputation Set

Albert S. Aloe and William H. Hernstein worked together after previously owning individual companies under their own names.  Together, they were located at 300 N. 4th,  St. Louis, Missouri from 1879 to 1880.  See other information on these makers in Edmonson's book on American Surgical Instruments:

Aloe & Hernstein (Albert S. Aloe and William H. Hernstein) surgical instruments

1876-78: 206 N. 4th, manufactory at 3II N. 4th

1879-80: 300 N. 4th

Aloe, Hernstein & Co. (Albert S. Aloe, William H. Hernstein, and David Prince)

1881-84: 300 N. 4th

This unique amputation set is housed in a beautifully grained mahogany wood case measuring 15.5 x 3 x 5 inches.   Note: the copper wire inlay is missing on one end of the lid otherwise the wood case is perfect.  The instruments are plated and in like new condition.  The set is complete and correct.

By the late 1870's, German silver and nickel plating is seen on many tourniquets
