This amputation set has features found in the Weigand-Snowden period (bone forceps),  a marked tourniquet for 1860 and clearly the type tourniquet Snowden and Bro. used during the Civil War.  The amputation knives are typical to the 1850's when blades were long, big, and handles were much larger and 'beefy'.  The wood case has swinging latches as you would expect during the 1850's.  So, there are some incongruities in the dating of the set, but my guess would be this set, which belonged to a post-Civil War medical school graduate was a gift and never saw use.  The as-new condition is testimony to it never having been used and was maintained as a family heirloom.  The set was obtained from a physician family member of the original owner, so the set has never been out of the hands of the original family.

The dates when Snowden was in business alone, was for only a two year period, 1855-1857.  Most likely the set was made during that period, with the 1860 tourniquet added later when the set was sold to Dr. Priest.
