A United States Army
Hospital Department set as made for the Union troops by George Tiemann Co.,
New York. The set has military latches, and is correctly marked on the
brass plaque as Civil War government issue. The mahogany set with heavy
brass corners and screws, measures 6 x 14 x 2.5 inches. This set came
with another U. S. Army Hospital Dept. Civil War surgical set.

There are several
instruments in the lower part of the case which are not listed in the factory
detail label, but they are consistent with the era, set, and use. The
detail label refers to this set as for 'Strictures'. Strictures
indicates use for enlargement of the male urinary tract.
The brass tubes each
have a rounded end wax 'bougie'. The wax
coated stick would have been used for insertion using progressively larger
diameters for relief of 'stricture' in the
canal.
