Expanded Photos of Cased Surgical Sets

Ivory Tiemann 3 layer Surgical Set ca. 1850

This is an extensive surgical set with ivory handles by Tiemann. The address is 63 Chatham St., New York. This was the company's address from 1833-1855.  A nearly identical, though less complete set can be found in American Surgical Instruments by Edmonson, pages 102-103.  Unusual features of this set include two separate lift out mahogany boxes. One contains a small 2 layer urology set and the other contains a small 2 layer ophthalmology set. Both of these have the same red velvet lining as the larger mahogany box, which has wonderful brass bands. The tourniquet in this set is also of unusual form.
