Expanded Photos of Cased Surgical Sets

Ebony Handled Surgical Set by Tiemann ca. 1850

This Tiemann surgical set is as unusual for its box as the instruments within. The box is about 1/3 smaller than the standard Tiemann amputation kit of the era.  It is much narrower than usual.  The latches on front are push buttons, which are unusual for Tiemann sets. One trephine set pictured in American Surgical Instruments by Edmonson has a single similar latch and dates to the same period.  The box contains amputation and trephination instruments. One of the trephine heads is an unusual elongated design. Another unusual feature is the material of the trephine head: horn.
